F3 car made of potatoes and running on chocolate – the headlines have been everywhere so I took myself to Bruntingthorpe to see if this formula class race car made from sustainable materials could really make it round the track without limping off with technical issues.

140mph and still going

Imagine my surprise when not only did the engine fire up but the car reached a seriously respectable 140mph! and not a technical glitch in sight. TV crews from Spain and Russia clamoured for the best positions around the track to film this truly remarkable machine go through its paces.

This inspiring project, sponsored by Warwick Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (WIMRC), even attracted the attention of Formula 1 World Champion, Lewis Hamilton at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Dr Steve Maggs, part of the WorldFirst Racing research team said: “As original equipment manufacturers focus on decreasing engine emissions to meet future CO2 targets, the WorldFirst project proves that if you are going to wholeheartedly embrace the ‘green is great’ ethos, then you have to broaden your vision. The WorldFirst project clearly demonstrates that automotive environmentalism can and should be about the whole package.”

Check out my interview with the project team and footage of the car in action.
