Everyone grows old, like taxes, it is one of those inevitable things. However the problem the modern world is now facing is that too many people are becoming too old at once.
Health care and the NHS is a limited resource in the UK, it is also geared up for the treatment of illness, not for the prevention of it
Today saw the start of a two day conference at Savoy Place on the subject of Assisted Living. Remote telemetry, robotics, tele health, Soylent Green and Logans Run where just some of the interesting topics covered by a range of speakers.
A large part of the day was focused on work of the Assisted Living Innovation Platform, which is funded by the Technology Strategy Board with the IET holding the first conference on the work of the ALIP.
Whilst the morning session saw more traditional presentations delivered on the general arena of Assisted Living, the afternoon saw a splitting of tracks. Track one consisted of presentations on Wireless Sensor Networks in AL. Track two delivered something different however the companies involved in the ALIP were given the chance to present on their innovations and developments to other companies participating in the platform. Whilst both sessions were well attended, track two proved so popular it was standing room only.
This is of course not to say the morning session was not without its unique features, the main one being a rather unexpected fire alarm and proceeding evacuation of the building. I am happy to say however that all was well and we were allowed back in as quickly as possible to resume the conference.
For those who were not able to attend this unique event I am pleased to say that parts of the morning session and the afternoon keynote, by Mike Short of Telefonica, were filmed by IET.tv. Also watch this space for a link to a brief but insightful interview with Graham Worsley, from the TSB, on what he finds interesting about the work of the ALIP and its future progression.
So, did you attend this event? If you did then please feel free to let me know what you thought using the comment section below.
