Laura Cage, The IET

Back in 1858 the first communications link was laid beneath 1,600 nautical miles of the Atlantic Ocean, linking the old and new worlds.  Now, 150 years on, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a world leading engineering organisation is marking this historic moment with a special event.

The 1858 telegraph cable was the first in a series of cutting-edge technologies that enabled fast and accurate communication between Britain and the USA, linking the old and new worlds.

1858 Transatlantic Cable event

The IET in conjunction with Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, is holding a seminar and lecture on the 1858 cable and later transatlantic communications links.

The seminar will be followed by a lecture from Professor Nigel Linge of University of Salford. The lecture will also explore how the birth of the transatlantic cable has led to the development of the worldwide web.

The event takes place on 28 October 2008 at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester.

Admission to this event is free, so if your interested then why not pop along?
