Victoria Snelling, The IET

The UK Government is proposing to mandate smart meters to monitor electricity and gas usage in all domestic households, SMEs and public sector sites.

The idea is that with a smart meter with a display providing us with real-time information about our energy usage we will be encouraged to change our habits. Maybe if the meters weren’t tucked away where you can’t see them it would help.

During the planning phase a programme of work will include the development of the technical specifications for the meters and display units and this will necessarily raise issues of EMI.

The IET has been invited to respond to the government’s consultation and has a list of questions for members to answer. The deadline for making your views known is 24 July 2009.
