Simon Yarwood, The IET

In October this Network organised a tour of the National Museum of Computing, a place dedicated to showing the development of computing in its broadest sense from the pioneering war time efforts that resulted in Colossus, to the products and systems we use today.

Last Friday, the fourth of December, I was back there, but this time to witness the opening of a new exhibit on the history of the internet.

History of the Internet gallery

As the regular readers will remember from Packets aren’t just for sweets blog from this time last year the internet would not be possible without the work of Donald Davies and his team at NPL, and in particular the paper titled ‘A Digital Communications Network For Computers’ which outlined the theory of packet switching for more efficient data transfer over networks.

One of the hardware engineers working on Davies team was Brian Aldous, current Chairman of the IET’s Multi Media Communications Network.  Brian worked with Roger Scantlebury and other members of Davies team to create this new gallery that traces the history of communication technology with interactive exhibits, audio-visual displays, real-time mapping of global internet connections and an internet technology timeline.

NPL continued its close alignment with Davies and his work through sponsoring the gallery to ensure this important part of modern history is not lost or indeed taken for granted.

I would encourage anyone who is in the area, especially those digital natives out there to pay a visit to the museum and take the chance to learn about not only the evolution of modern computing, but now the creation of the communications revolution which enables you to read this article right now.
