Dr Simon Harrison, chair of the Energy Sector Panel, was on the BBC Weekend Breakfast programme on Saturday (27 June) speaking about the increasing price of electricity bills and the associated factors.
He discussed the reasons behind these price increases, in particular referring to the effects of decarbonising the energy sector as a whole to deal with climate change, in parallel with the need for investment to ensure energy security. This is all expensive and the cost is passed onto the customer.
Dr Harrison talked to the Radio 1 presenter about the different types of energy generation, highlighting the importance of a having an ‘energy mix’ to achieve the best solution. For example he mentioned the importance of nuclear as part of the energy mix - nuclear is concentrated and so can generate lots of power from one place, but as is the case with many things a positive usually comes with negatives, in this case the fact that there are not many supplier available and the issues of waste.
The interview was rounded off by recognising the impact price hikes will have on those already in fuel poverty. Ultimately people need to change their behaviour as energy users by using less.
Often when things cost more, people cut spending - could a price hike be a good thing to cut our carbon emissions?
