Jennifer Wiffen, The IET

Smart metering is thought to be key to achieving the government targets of cutting carbon emissions as they will allow the customer to manage their use of power.

Not only is this great for reducing C02 levels but it has also meant that British Gas is creating 2,600 jobs. These new employees will be installing the smart meters and will also be educating the users to help them manage their energy use.

So it would seem that the roll out of smart meters is a definite, but how it is rolled out is yet to be decided - who will handle the data?

Ed Miliband has therefore launched a consultation on this. If you are a member of the IET and want to add anything take a look at the IET’s consultation response.

The IET are also running an event on smart metering on the 24 September, with pre-seminar workshops on the 23 September.
