Janine Mitchell, The IET

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is leading a project with researchers from Leicester University to see if artificial intelligence and satellite data can help to manage traffic.

Their research will begin by examining the city’s Star Trak system, which will help the team to analyse traffic flow through the city at various times of the day. Computer models will then be created to test the efficiency of artificial intelligence being incorporated in to traffic controlled systems.

Leicester University is providing earth-observation satellite data as well as ground-based environmental sensors to monitor air quality. This information will then be used to see when measures need to be taken to reduce air pollution in particular parts of the city during times of heavy traffic build-up.
