Objectives

The objectives of the Vision and Imaging TPN are:

  • To facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas amongst the Vision and Imaging community.
  • To provide members of the community with products and services that enable them to remain competent, enhance their effectiveness, develop their professional skills and capabilities.
  • To promote and support the enterprises, industries, educators and students involved in visual information engineering.
  • To raise the standard and visibility of the visual information engineering discipline so as to promote its beneficial contribution to society.

This Network’s aim is to make Vision and Imaging knowledge accessible to IET members and the wider community. The Vision and Imaging Network covers all aspects relating to the generation, processing, communication, understanding and presentation of visual information. This includes image processing, machine vision, pattern recognition, and computer graphics.

How is it different and distinctive?

The Vision and Imaging community is served by many other organisations too. We recognise this and so offer distinctive characteristics:

1. Our strong emphasis is applications. Rather than theory, techniques, or technologies, our events, projects and networking emphasise problem domains and the way that vision and imaging expertise can be applied to them. Examples are:

  • Security, crime and biometrics
  • Transport
  • Automated inspection and manufacture
  • Games
  • Learning
  • Document processing

2. Our events, projects and networking are designed to bring together theoreticians and practitioners, industrialists and academics, employers and students, vision experts and graphics experts, sellers and buyers of Vision and Imaging technologies.

3. The Vision and Imaging TPN emphasises communication between its members. The website contains unique features for image processing, computer vision and graphics professionals and keeps members up to date with regular news. The IET forums are available for technical discussions, and it is possible for any member to suggest a project or event and find support through the network.

4. The IET's role in supporting engineering education in the UK means we can connect students with each other and with employers. This community promotes image-based careers among students and informs industry about the personnel resources being developed in the Universities.
