Jonathan Vickers, Stemmer Imaging Ltd

Like previous images from Stemmer, the following was achieved using the Manto tool within the Common Vision Blox software. Manto is a 'support vector machine' that has the advantage of being able to generalise features from a training set.

This months’ image demonstrates a process of image recognition (rather than a processed image) with a task that is very simple for a human, but very difficult to automate.

The intention is to check that the packaging matches the contents. This first image is of a spice (dried chilli),

Image is of a spice (dried chilli)

the second is of a sandwich

In both cases there would be serious consequences for the manufacturers if the contents were not correct, consider the case for food allergies. Here Manto's ability to 'learn' textures is being used. This is a useful generalisation that allows colour and texture to be recognised - in the case of the sandwiches, imagine the variations in appearance for sandwich fillings.

I hope to bring you a few more of these interesting processed image projects throughout the year and if you have any questions please feel free to contact us at Stemmer Imaging directly.

Editors note: If you have a processed image that you would like to share with the community, email it to Sarah-Jane.
