A new joint venture from the IET and the Institute of Nanotechnology gets under way next month with a lecture at Savoy Place by one of the nanotech sector’s most celebrated researchers. The launch event for the Microsystems and Nanotechnology Network on the evening of 8 July will see Professor James Gimzewski of the University of California, Los Angeles (pictured right) talk about the strongest material ever made, the reality of a space elevator, how the electronics industry kick-started the nanomedicine revolution, and the potential for programming single molecules. He will also share with his audience some of his passion for the artistic interpretation of the nano world.
Prior to joining the UCLA faculty, Gimzewski was a group leader at IBM Zurich Research Laboratory. He pioneered research on mechanical and electrical contacts with single atoms and molecules using scanning tunneling microscopy and was one of the first people to image molecules with STM.
His current interests are in the nanomechanics of cells and bacteria where he collaborates with the UCLA Medical and Dental Schools. He is involved in projects that range from the operation of X-rays, ions and nuclear fusion using pyroelectric crystals, direct deposition of carbon nanotubes and single molecule DNA profiling.

A top official from the European Commission will be one of the keynote speakers at this year’s European Manufacturing Strategies summit, which is supported by the IET and E&T. Taking place at the Swissotel, Düsseldorf on 6-9 October, the event begins with a choice of advanced manufacturing tours at BMW’s Leipzig production plant and DHL’s air hub. Pre-conference masterclasses will set the scene for two days of keynote conference sessions, streamed focus groups, interactive workshops and private one-to-one meetings to take stock of best practice in manufacturing.
Speakers will include Jürgen Krüger, director, Economies of the Member States, directorate general for economic and financial affairs, European Commission; Martin Smith, CI/quality director, Lear Corp, Germany; Dr Alan McLenaghan, managing director, Saint Gobain Glass UK; and Christopher Game, head of techops sourcing, Novartis.
Topics covered will include the changing perceptions of manufacturing and attracting talent to the workforce; cutting your carbon footprint; driving product development and protecting your intellectual property; and the ‘factory of the future’.
IET members are entitled to a £200 discount. For more information, visit www.ems-summit.com/pack_delegate.asp or contact Laurence Allen at laurence.allen@wtgevents.com, (+44 (0) 207 202 7560).
