The Serial ATA storage interface is to get a speed boost in its next version, taking datarates from 3Gb/s to 6Gb/s.
The Serial ATA International Organisation (SATA-IO) released to its members yesterday (18 August) the physical-layer portion of the specification which will ultimately form part of SATA Revision 3.0, which the group reckons will be completed by the end of the year.
Backward compatibility with earlier SATA implementations will be maintained by keeping the existing connector, although that may put extra demands on the materials used in the components and cables.
According to John Rydning, IDC research director for hard drives, SATA has become the primary storage interface with more than 650 million SATA hard drives shipped since its introduction in 2001.
